Scientists arrive in Stawell to welcome experiment components

Dark matter scientists have arrived in Stawell to welcome the first components of the SABRE South dark matter experiment!

They have received the first load of the 120 tonnes of shielding that will surround the main vessel of the experiment when it arrives in the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory.

After more than a decade of travelling hundreds of kilometres to Stawell from universities in Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Sydney, the scientists are now based in the regional town full time.

Their lab coats have been replaced by cleaning products as they buff and polish the shielding that plays the crucial role of protecting the vessel from contamination.

In the lead up to the arrival of the vessel they will continue to unpack, clean and assemble the components as they arrive in the underground lab.
